When should I contact a lawyer?

-  In today's world, everyone moves quickly. Witness statements, photos, evidence collection, videos, skid marks, accident debris, cellphone records all should be gathered as soon as possible after an accident. Many items can be lost, misplaced or just disappear. An attorney should be contacted as soon as you can to instruct you how to proceed.

How much will it cost me?

-  Contrary to what people say or all the crazy ads on TV, lawyers in personal injury matters are typically governed by their State Bar association and/or State law in what they can charge. Most of us offer free consultations and only get paid at the end of the case based on a contingency fee or % of the money received on your behalf. Those percentages may range from 25% to 40% and can be negotiated. Even if you have a lawyer and are not satisfied with him or her, the total legal fee cannot exceed the maximum among all the lawyers.

How long will my case take?

-  It is virtually impossible to predict how long any case can take to be resolved. Whether by settlement, arbitration or litigation, the resolution typically takes no less than 1 year nor more than 5 years.

I am having financial difficulties because I am injured or unable to work. Can my attorney loan me money?

- An attorney is prohibited by legal ethics/disciplinary rules from advancing any money on a case. He or she can pay for some or most of the costs associated with your case, then be reimbursed at the conclusion.

My attorney has had my case for several years now, but he does not return my calls or give me updates. What can I do?

- The good news is that you can always switch attorneys if you are not satisfied without any additional cost to you. Your new attorney will contact the former attorney and obtain your file.
